Allison Day

Happy Lunar New Year, everyone! It’s the Year of the Rabbit (or Year of the Cat, if you’re celebrating the Vietnamese calendar). How are you guys celebrating?

We celebrated with lots… and lots… and lots of food. Oh man. I must say, having a Vietnamese boyfriend is awesome. ~_^

Plus, we’re back! And in the spirit of the new lunar year, we’re giving away that adorable Lunar Calendar dish towel in the first photo.

(And just look at what a cute package it comes in!)

All you have to do to win… leave a comment telling me what you would like to see on Sushi Day this year. More maki rolls? More deconstructed sushi? More videos? Or do you have other ideas for something I’ve never done here before?

One entry per person, please. Contest ends on Friday, February 11, at 11:59pm PST. Winner will be picked using random.org. I will ship worldwide.

So what have I been doing the past month that’s kept me away from you guys? Well, for one thing, I now have a Tumblr page where I post about sushi (of course), sustainable seafood news, and any other fun Japanese-ish things I come across. I’m pretty excited about it. If any of you are on Tumblr and want more sushi in your day, feel free to follow me. ^_^

Plus on top of that, I’ve been dancing pretty much every day (I still want to be a ballerina when I grow up ~_^), coding a lot (I revamped my personal website… it’s rather enthusiastically “Allison”, I think… plus I’m doing tons of coding work. I’m available for hire, if anyone needs a website or any other programming done!), and, well, just living my life, which really isn’t all that exciting. But it keeps me busy… sometimes too busy. Definitely need to schedule in some more sushi like this delicious mackerel, don’t you think?

Ingredients
  • 1 oz sashimi-grade mackerel
  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp vinegar
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • green onion, sliced
Cooking Directions
  1. Thinly slice the mackerel on an angle.
  2. Mix the mustard, lemon juice, vinegar, and mayonnaise.
  3. Drizzle the mustard sauce over the mackerel, and sprinkle with green onion. Enjoy!

    Happy New Year!! Meow ;)

We went to temple (mom is hardcore Buddhist) from like 8pm-2am!! Although it was fun to see the performances and get my fortune for the new year.

i would like more videos. I love to make sushi, but don’t have very good technique, so videos would be a great help to see how a pro does it. I love all of your unique recipes too. It has been trying some of the things I would never think to combine.

I’ve taken an interest in Oshizushi (pressed sushi using an oshibako mold) and Chirashi-zushi (bowl sushi). Both are older forms of sushi that use seasoned rice (yakumi-sushi). I recently attended a lecture, thru the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston, given by master chef Masahiko Yanagihara of Tokyo on the subject. Since I haven’t found a restaurant that makes this sushi, I would be interested in more recipes, since this sushi varies regionally in Japan. Master chef Masa was reluctant to tell me the seasonings he used for yakumi-sushi. I’ve been on my own when making this. I was going for pink rice and it came out purple on my first attempt.

    Happy T?t Nguyên ?án!

I enjoy greatly the photos you include with your recipes! I haven’t rolled my first sushi yet, I’m afraid to try! But one of these days…
I think I agree with Bob B. Older traditional styles of sushi would be interesting!
Keep up the beautiful work and enjoy your tasty pursuits! Long live Sushi!

Happiest of New Years to you!! I wanted to say thank you for the T’shirts I received a while back!! We wear them every time we do sushi night which is once a month on Wednesdays…everyone loves them! I guess I just like what you do on your site and since I live in Montana, I was wondering if you could come up with a ‘trout’ sushi recipe? Sounds interesting, and I’m not sure if it’s even used in sushi, but I thought I would throw it out there:)

  12. Kanit says:

i really enjoy your website. I like to see more deconstructed sushi and more about sustainable sushi recipes. I live in NC and there is not one restaurant or suppliers that serve sustainable sushi.
