Allison Day

Auntie Reiko

This is my awesome Great Aunt Rieko (and my gorgeous mother).

Let me just say I have the coolest great aunt in the world.

It’s true.

You can’t convince me otherwise.

She loves to feed us. (Every time we go out with her, she always wants to order extra so we can take home food.)

She’s such a giver. (She always wants to buy things to give to us, her sisters, her friends…)

She brightens everyone’s day. (The word you hear most around her is “happy”… “I’m so happy to see you; I’m so happy you came to hang out with me!” She’s one happy camper.)

She loves the food I make. (She always asks when I’ll make more of these for her.)

And the last time we went to hang out with her, last weekend, she said to us with a completely serious expression, “Son and Allison, we’re going to have to stop by the adoption agency after this, so I can adopt you both.” And then a huge grin broke out on her face.

I love that woman.

Me at the craft faire

The reason we were hanging out was to go to a Japanese craft faire with her and my mother. (It was the second craft faire my mom took her to in as many days.) Son and I decided to go along, because we wanted to get some fun little things to give away to Sushi Day readers.

(You can’t see it in the picture, but that little green bin I’m holding is filled to the brim with cool stuff to give away!)

Yes, that means you!

Why? Just because. I like giveaways. Don’t you? ^_^

Sushi Earrings

This week, I’m giving away this super cute pair of sushi earrings. To be honest, I almost skipped this week’s giveaway… because I kind of really want to keep them for myself.

But I love you guys, so I’ll do the right thing and give them away to one of you.

(The things I do for you people! The sacrifices I make! ~_^)

They’d make an awesome holiday gift. Or birthday gift. Or I’m-just-going-to-keep-these-for-myself-because-I-deserve-them gift.

Whatever strikes your fancy.

All you have to do for a chance to win, is leave a comment on this post, telling me who’s going to get these earrings if you win them. (You? Your mom? Your sister? Significant other? If it helps, my answer would definitely be “Me!” ^_^)

Contest ends the evening of Saturday, December 11th, at midnight, Pacific time. One entry per person. The winner will be picked randomly. I’ll notify the winner by email, and ship the earrings out ASAP. Contest is open to anyone and everyone. I’ll ship anywhere!

Oh, and these scallops? Sashimi grade scallops, on top of fried polenta and avocado. Drizzle it with shoyu and ohmygosh is it so good. Betcha never thought of eating polenta with soy sauce, now did you? Well, you should. It’s an excellent, if a bit nontraditional, combination.

  • 4 sashimi-grade scallops
  • 1/2 cylinder of pre-cooked polenta
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 tbsp fried onions
  • shoyu
Cooking Directions
  1. Slice the polenta into 4 circular slices. Fry in the butter until golden-brown. Set aside.
  2. Cut the avocado in half and carefully remove the pit and skin, then slice into thick slices.
  3. Place a fried slice of polenta on a plate, and top with avocado slices and a scallop. Sprinkle with fried onions.
  4. Drizzle with shoyu and enjoy!

I love polenta and I love sushi, so I am soo psyched to see them combined !!! Btw your mom looks amazing and so does your great aunt. The part of her wanting to please you and feed you reminds me of my Greek grandmother. Exactly the same.

    Me 🙂

I would be super tempted to keep them for myself, but they would also have a chance of going to my good friend. Your aunt reminds me so much of my japanese grandmother who I miss dearly. That recipe looks great!

Allison 😀 (Oh wait, is that cheating? )

Too cute! I’d have to keep them for myself. And I have to try polenta with scallops, that sounds amazingly good.

Me 🙂 but I will give them to my best friend. I moved to UK a year ago and I didn’t see her for whole that year. And as we both love sushi it will be a great gift and reminder of me to her, that I still think of her and our sushi takeaway lunches at school :))

Thanks for your great family story, it made me smile too. They sound fun to be with. You have the Christmas spirit and so am I! Well, all I could think about is how cool the earings would look on my wonderful wife! Now that is something to smile about …making others happy. Thanks for the smiles! Happy Holidays and sushi abound,

Just wanted to let you know how interesting I found the polenta/sushi pairing idea. Polenta, or mamaliga which I grew up with, needs to be incorporated in the cuisine of more countries.

The earrings are great and I’d wear them myself if I won cause no one I know loves sushi as much as I do.

I always read your blog because I really like Sushi. Interesting blog, simple story, supported the results of good photographs and recipes with new creations.

I give my comments this time, of course besides interested in beautiful earrings, also touched with the spirit of always giving done by the woman who told you above.

We as young people, of course, also must have a spirit like that, not only on the people we know but also to people who can not afford.

If I win this prize, I’ll give it to a girl who dropped out of school, the mother only works as a maid.

I would give the earrings to my assistant Stacey who makes Sushi at home and brings to work ( and always shares a bite with me!). She’s a rock and “roll” kind of girl!

  15. Stacie says:

I’d probably keep them. I don’t actually know many people who like sushi.
