Mobo Sushi

Aaahhh!!! I’m still here, I promise!! I posted the Halo 3 Sushi [1] a little over a week ago and figured I would be able to post another post by the end of the week… then I started school. Man!! Tons of reading this quarter, and 27 hours of class in addition to that doesn’t leave much time for writing sushi posts! Then we got onto Kotaku [2] where they are flaming me in the comments… bleh. Anyways, HUGE spike in traffic in the past couple of days which is of course totally stressing me out!! Gah! So of course, it wasn’t until last night that I had time to write a sushi post. Here it is… and I’ll try to be around more often! Plenty of sushi to come!
A little while ago, I went up north with Son, my dad, and my sister to help my sister move into college. We stayed at a relative’s house in Monterey (can I just say how much I LOVE Monterey? Sooooo beautiful!! Cold and rainy while we were there, but beautiful.) Anyways, my aunt heard that we like sushi, and recommended that we stop by a sushi restaurant that she loves when we pass through Santa Cruz. I have an old high school friend who goes to UCSC, so we decided to meet up with him since we were in the area. It just happens that he’s familiar with Mobo Sushi [3] (the place my aunt recommended), so we decided to go there for dinner.
We arrived around 6 or 7 pm, and although it seemed pretty busy, we were still seated right away. We sat near the door, so I didn’t get to see much of the restaurant, although I have a feeling it was pretty good sized. I didn’t see a sushi bar there, but it was partitioned into at least 3 or 4 rooms, so it could have been in another room that I didn’t have a good view of. On the other hand, I had a great view of a beautiful aquarium. No, no, not sashimi, just goldfish and the such. Won’t be slicing up these fish!
We all started with miso soup. Now, I may not have mentioned it before, but I love miso soup. So much that I really should learn to make it myself (which, by the way, I am planning on doing very soon… so if I get around to it it will be up… in a month or two…
) Anyways, I have had some pretty bad miso soups, and I have had some really good ones, and this was in the latter group. Of course, it was cold and windy and rainy outside, (okay so not that bad but I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to cold… heck I’m from sunny Southern California!!) so that of course, made the miso soup taste even better.
When ordering, I asked my high school friend what he recommended, since he had been there several times. Among other rolls, he recommended the Flying Tiger (tempura black tiger shrimp, imitation crab, lemon, green onion, avocado, and miso mayonnaise) and the Snowmaki (snow crab and avocado) which Son and I ended up sharing.
The sushi was, well, interesting. The Snowmaki was pretty much the same as my California Roll [4], except instead of shredding the imitation crab like I do, I think it was real crab and it was in a whole piece. It was pretty good, although the pieces of sushi were too large for me to eat in one bite (I have a small mouth), so they usually ended up falling apart on my plate. They were good though, I would get them again.
The Flying Tiger baffled me. My friend really recommended it, so I thought it was going to be really good! I don’t think I would get this again, although if I were with someone who got it I would definitely want to try a piece to see if I just got a randomly bad roll or something. It was very sour, which I would assume would be from the lemon but it gave me the impression that something was going bad… more a spoiling food sort of sour as opposed to a tart lemon type of sour. The reasons why I think this may not be the norm are: 1. My friend really recommended it, and I have faith in his taste and I know he wouldn’t recommend something bad, and 2. I made the roll at home later, and it was really really good! So I don’t know what happened. Plus, the roll wasn’t rolled tightly enough… they were falling apart before I even bit into them!
I would definitely go here again if I were ever in the area, if not for the sushi that I had last time. They had tons of really interesting combinations (some coming soon!), that I would definitely love to try. Since my dad was paying, I didn’t want to get anything too expensive, so I went with just two simple rolls instead of a bunch of the more interesting ones. Overall I had a good time, and it was definitely great to see an old friend again! (Oh and in case you were wondering, my sister is having a great time and making lots of friends at college! I’m guessing the only thing she doesn’t like about it is that she can’t ask me to come home and make sushi anymore, because she’s a little too far away!
